Richard has led FDA’s Lighting Department since 1996. He is responsible for the design and specification of lighting systems for all FDA projects, including dimming, control, luminaries, special effects and electrical distribution. He has a particular specialization in concert lighting for world-class symphony orchestras.
Richard was FDA’s Project Manager and designed the stage lighting systems for the Hollywood Bowl Renovation, Cal Arts’ new REDCAT theatre in the Disney Concert Hall, Alaska Center for the Performing Arts Renovation, Santa Monica College’s new Madison Site Theatre and the renovation of the J. Paul Getty Villa in Malibu.
He has designed lighting systems for dozens of performing arts facilities, including the acclaimed Radio City Music Hall Renovation and the Ford Center for the Performing Arts in New York City; the recently renovated Biltmore Theatre, the new home of Manhattan Theatre Club; the Roger Berlind Theatre, the new second space at the McCarter Theatre Center, Princeton University; the North Carolina School of the Arts Music Chamber Hall, Winston-Salem, N.C.; the Hobby Center, Houston; and the Performing Arts Center of Greater Miami. Several years ago, he designed the stage lighting systems for 10 new Royal Caribbean and Celebrity cruise ships. Richard recently completed the stage lighting system for the Ellie Caulkins Opera House, part of the Denver Performing Arts Complex.
Prior to joining FDA, Richard was a lighting systems engineer for a major dimming & control equipment manufacturer. He also has over 20 years’ experience in the performing arts lighting industry.
Among his performance lighting designs are productions of Richard ll at the Mark Taper Forum; From the Mississippi Delta at Trinity Rep; The Wanderings of Odysseus at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, the Off-Broadway production of Ascension Day at the Hudson Guild Theatre, and Boundless Grace at the Children's Theatre Company in Minneapolis. In 2001, Richard designed the lighting for the environmental symphony Decasia, at the Europaischer Musikmonat theatre in Basel, Switzerland.
Richard received Dramalogue Awards for his lighting design of Carnage, directed by Tim Robbins at the Tiffany Theatre and Mrs. Cage at the Two Light Theatre; as well as an 1992 NAACP Image Award for The Task directed by L. Kenneth Richardson at Taper Too in Los Angeles. He was formerly Associate Professor of Lighting at California State University’s Department of Theatre, and during the 1988-89 season, was Resident Assistant Lighting Designer at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles.
He is a graduate of Carnegie-Mellon University, Pittsburgh, and an active member of United Scenic Artists Local 829.
