Barbara E. Spandorf, AIA
Associate


A practicing architect for 19 years with major firms in New York City, Barbara joined FDA in 1997. She is responsible for design and project management for both overseas and domestic work.

She is project manager for the new 1000 seat Henry Miller's theater in New York's Broadway theatre district; the proposed downtown New York performance space that will house the Joyce Theatre on the World Trade Center site, working with Frank O. Gehry & Associates; the newly completed Holland Performing Arts Center which includes a 2,000-seat concert hall in Omaha, Neb., with Polshek Partnership; the proposed Jefferson Parish Performing Arts Center in Louisiana; the Myeong-dong Theater for drama in Seoul, Korea; and the renovation of Guild Hall in East Hampton, NY with Robert A.M. Stern Associates. She was in charge of FDA’s work for Manhattan Theater Club’s new home in the renovated Biltmore Theatre in New York City; the 499-seat Little Shubert Theatre on Theatre Row in Manhattan; the 1,400-seat Daegu Opera House, Korea; the 1,100-seat Korea World Trade Center Auditorium in Seoul; the Ursinus College Performing Arts Center, Philadelphia, and Hill Auditorium renovation at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.

She is involved in the programming and planning for a proposed three-theatre complex in Sacramento, CA; planning and design of the Georgetown University Performing Arts Center in Washington, D.C., and the Hasty Pudding Theatre for Harvard University in Cambridge, and a new Studio Theater for Barnard College in New York City. As part of FDA’s design team, she worked on seating and sightline design for the Hippodrome Theatre renovation in Baltimore.

Barbara previously worked on the Lensic Theatre, in Santa Fe, N.M.; an opera/ theatre/concert hall competition in Ilsan, Korea, and the renovation of the Oklahoma City Civic Center.

She brings expertise in theatre planning and design from her work on several projects with leading New York architecture firms including the Tishman Auditorium for The New School University in New York City, which received awards from the American Institute of Architects’ national, state and local chapters.

From her previous work with New York architecture firms Prentice and Chan/Ohlhausen, and Beyer Blinder Belle, she brought to FDA expertise in design, master planning, and construction administration for institutional clients.

Barbara earned a B.A. in Sociology and Art History from Oberlin College, and an M. Arch. from UCLA. She received her professional registration in 1990. She is a Co-Chair of the Cultural Facilities Committee of the New York City chapter of the AIA. In 2000, she was awarded a travel grant from the New York City chapter of American Institute of Architects to study historic and contemporary theatres in Italy, France, and the United Kingdom. She is an accomplished photographer and an avid cyclist and runner.
